What could have been…

Some of you may recall that, earlier this year, we came very close to buying a new home. In a seven-day span, we found a wonderful home, fixed up our current house, and wrote an offer … only to have to walk away when we got bad news from our accountant about how much we owed Uncle Sam.

It sucked.

For me, probably the biggest attraction about the other house was that there was nothing behind it but mountains and sky to the west. I took this photo tonight. This is what could’ve been:

What could have been...

If we’d bought that house, that would’ve been our backyard view. Every night. I’d have sat with my laptop out on the back patio and been completely unproductive.

I showed the house to Cari’s mom a couple weeks ago when she was visiting. I think she agreed with me that the house itself isn’t all that grand.

But the view is something else.

Edgewater Hotel, Seattle: What a view!

I was over in Seattle earlier this week for the SMX Advanced conference at the Bell Harbor Convention Center and, for the first time, I stayed right next door at the Edgewater Hotel. Not only that, but I also scored a room on the Elliott Bay side of the hotel. This was the view out my window:

Edgewater Hotel: Elliott Bay (2)

There were various boats and ferries passing by the hotel on a fairly regular basis, but they’re not so loud as to be annoying or anything. It’s very peaceful, and I really would’ve liked to have more time to just sit and relax in the room. Here’s another pic that looks a little more toward the city.

The hotel itself was quite nice, too. Very distinctive stylings and decor. The staff was very good. I’ll definitely want to stay here again at next year’s conference, and I’m sure the family would love it, too, on our next visit.

I Was on FSN Northwest Tonight

Well, come to think of it, it wasn’t technically me on FSN Northwest … it was my Twitter pictures. And my Twitter username. That’s kinda like being on FSN, isn’t it?

What happened was that Ken Griffey Jr. retired today, and during the Mariners pre-game show, Sean and I grabbed our Griffey bobbleheads and placed them in front of the TV as if they were watching FSN’s Griffey tribute. I took a photo and posted it on Twitter:

And here’s the photo from that tweet:

bobbleheads

Whomever handles the FSN Northwest account on Twitter saw that pic and retweeted me with an “AWESOME” in all caps. Then, like 45 minutes later while we’re watching the game, all of a sudden … holy crap, FSN is showing that photo in the middle of the game broadcast!

So, I did what anyone would do: I took a photo of my photo being shown on FSN Northwest, and also put that on Twitter:

And here’s the photo attached to that:

FSN saw that tweet/photo, too, and sent me a message saying they were planning to show both photos during the post-game show. And sure enough, they did!

They actually showed both photos in order, and Brad Adam & Bill Krueger talked about them and all. It was kinda funny. As I’ve said before, I love Twitter.

Next time I wonder why I’m taking silly photos and putting them on Twitter, I’ll remember this episode. You just never know what might happen….

Thanks, Rand McNally

One of my favorite and most popular photos ever was featured today on Rand McNally’s “on the road” blog:

I took that photo on Mother’s Day, 2006, and it’s been used several times on different sites.

With that in mind, Happy Mother’s Day to all moms who follow this blog for some reason. We had a nice day today here at Casa McGee. After church, Cari did a little shopping. I installed a new screen door off our family room, so we have a nice breeze coming in again. I also bought four little tomato plants; put two of them into a Topsy Turvy Planter and the other two in the ground. Now we’ll see if either set of plants will actually produce tomatoes. If so, it’ll be a Mother’s Day miracle.

Happy Birthday, Sparky

Birthday Boy

Sparky turns two years old today! Well, we don’t know exactly when his birthday is, but we celebrate it on April 7th each year. We brought Sparky home on July 4, 2008, and took him to the vet on July 7th. They estimated that he was already three months old then, and listed his birth date is April 7, 2008.

We rarely give him any human food, but tonight he’s gonna get a little steak to celebrate the big day.

Photos, in Video

I haven’t been overly inspired to take photos lately; well, for quite a long time, actually. Back in 2006, I took photos every day of the year for the full calendar year and posted them on Flickr. That was fun and challenging, but it also burned me out on photography.

Not long ago, a dear friend made a gorgeous video collage using some of my photos. And I don’t mean for this to sound conceited in ANY way, but seeing my pictures used this way has been somewhat inspirational. I think I’ll be picking up the camera more often in the future.

Here’s the video. Hope you like it.

The New Me :-)

Well, not really a new me, but some new business photos of me. And long overdue, too — the photo I’ve been using on my web sites and blogs (and as my social media avatar) is at least 5-6 years old now, and I just don’t look that young anymore. I haven’t seen all of the photos we took on Saturday, but of the ones I have seen, these are my favorites:

matt

How’d I do?

Strange that both are serious poses. There are some good smiley shots, too, but I just like these more.

The photog is a guy I’ve known from the Tri-Cities group on Flickr. I posted a thread about wanting to get some new portraits done, and chose him from the people who replied. He’s not really even in business for himself yet, but has a little studio down in his basement at home, and all turned out well. Now Cari’s thinking about having him do new portraits for her, too.

Flickr Pix in the Wild

Been a while since I’ve done one of these posts, but the last week has brought several requests for photo usage and that reminded me to share some places where my Flickr photos have been used. I’ll start with a pic of our dog, Sparky, which is currently appearing on the home page of the Woof Report:

woof

That won’t stay on the home page for long, but it’s also being used on this newsletter page. Go Sparky!

Here are others I’ve found:

  • Beyond Phototips used my shot of footprints in the snow. It’s way down near the end of the article. On a related note, this same photo of mine will apparently be used in an Australian documentary that’s now in production. That was one of the email requests that came in this week.
  • My uber-popular baseball photo appeared on ivorytowerz late last month.
  • It also appeared on Bargain Briana.
  • A photo I took of the Oscar Mayer Wienermobile was used on Wide Open Wallet way back in March.
  • And my “The End” photo appeared on Through the Illusion.

Visiting the McGees? Try April

Our friends and family are welcome to visit us at any time of year, but if you’re smart and thinking ahead, you’ll come visit in April. I think it’s gotta be the best time to come see us. Here’s why:

If you come visit us in April, you’ll be able to see…

our tulips in bloom

Tulips Galore!

our cherry trees starting to blossom

Cherry Blossom #2

the magnolia tree/bush in full bloom

Magnolia in full bloom

the lilacs in all their purple glory

April 23, 2006: The Color Purple

and our crazy dog enjoying the warm weather

Attack!

So, yeah, this has gotta be the best month to come to West Richland and visit. Cari has always said that spring is her favorite time of year. That’s partly because her birthday is in spring, but I think the above also has a lot to do with it.

Latest Photo Finds

Lots of cool sightings of my Flickr photos out on the web lately, starting with my two kids appearing in the February newsletter from S. R. Clarke. (Hi Todd!)

my two kids

And here are a bunch of other photo finds in recent weeks:

  • That photo of my son and his friend selling lemonade was used on Small Biz Trends (one of my favorite blogs!).
  • Deal Seeking Mom used a tomato close-up photo a couple weeks ago.
  • Bag & Baggage recently used my rural mailbox photo.
  • Consumerist used another photo: an old Burger King french fries pic that I think they’ve used before, too.
  • A travel site called HoteloTravel used my Portland nightscape photo, which continues to be a popular choice for PDX-related sites to use.
