Well, it’s a tie. And that solves absolutely nothing in the long-running debate I’ve had with my buddy, Phil. I’ve made no secret in the past of my undying love and devotion for In-N-Out Burger. Phil, however, has always insisted that Five Guys is where it’s at.
I’ve never had (or even seen) a Five Guys burger, so I can’t argue one way or another. And maybe it’s a moot argument, anyway. Because, in the current issue of Consumer Reports, my favorite fast-food burger and Phil’s favorite fast-food burger tied in a survey of 28,000 readers. See the image at right for the full list. (You can click the image for a more readable version.)
I’m kinda surprised that Carl’s Jr. ranked so well. I think they’ve gone downhill in the past few years. Wendy’s burgers are really good (fresh meat, just like In-N-Out) and they should be higher. And Jack-In-The-Box deserves better, too, if only for the amazing deliciousness that is the Ultimate Cheeseburger.
For what it’s worth, In-N-Out won a Zagat survey last summer on this very topic.
Also worth noting: Five Guys is apparently coming to Spokane sometime soon, so maybe one of these days I’ll be able to reply to Phil about whether his burger is better than mine.

Five Guys are expanding nicely… though I am most surprised by Fuddruckers… never really liked their burger.
I’m not seeing Zips or their Belly Buster. I guess that’ll have to be our little secret. 🙂
Phil — I had Fuddruckers once and thought it was pretty good. But it’s no In-N-Out. 🙂
Ryan – would you believe I’ve never eaten at Zips? True…
Matt – I’m sitting here in complete shock. How could you have never eaten at Zips??? Go to the Zips by the mall (located on Fowler), get their Belly Buster… hell get the Double. And be sure you try the tartar sauce. Don’t go to the Zips by the Cable Bridge (service sucks) or the one on Lee in Richland (the tartar isn’t quite right). The Zips on Fowler has the best tartar sauce of the Zips around here. 🙂
Ryan
Why don’t we meet there for lunch one of these days?
@Matt,
I think we could do that. Maybe some time next week. I’ll shoot you an email so we can coordinate schedules.
