After the fun and success of driving all the way to Bend in May to see Sting, I decided why not do it again for Counting Crows?!?
Like many of the artists I’m seeing this year, I also saw Counting Crows during “My Year of Concerts” in 2023. As I said back then, they can be difficult to see because they don’t play the songs like you know them from the albums.
That was still the case at this show, but damn, something made it way better than the first one. I don’t know how to explain it. I was right up front for both shows, so my proximity had nothing to do with it.
Adam D. just seemed really into this show. Telling stories. Acting out the lyrics. Moving around the stage. This one had a different intensity than I recall from the 2023 show.
Also, I finally got to hear “Mrs. Potter’s Lullaby” live — one of my all-time favorite songs. They’ve been playing at about one of every four shows this year, so I feel really blessed to hear it at mine. When it started, my legs buckled, I yelled “OH MY GOD YES!!!!” at the top of my lungs, and totally lost it for the whole song, and most of the rest of the night.
Opening act was Gaslight Anthem. I knew the name, but not the music. Overall, pretty darn good!
