What’s in a name? (not much!)

    March 23, 2005

Our daughter is at the age where role-playing is about as fun as it gets. Over the weekend, she was role-playing with Sean and Mom where T was the mommy and they were both her babies. They played it up to the hilt — lots of crying, demanding things, etc. I finally suggested to T that she tell her kids it was time for a nap. So she did:

“C’mon baby, it’s time for a nap. Come lay down.”

    “C’mon other baby, it’s time for a nap….”

Baby. And Other Baby. Maybe you had to be there, but it was one of the funniest things I’ve heard…..

    Bowling…

    February 20, 2005

Let the record show that today, February 20, 2005, was T’s first time bowling. And she loved it!

I would place the ball right at the edge of the lane for her, and she’d give it a little push, which I would quickly push harder so it would reach the pins. It was the cutest thing — she would squat down and watch it go, and if she knocked one over, she’d turn around in a flash and put both arms in the air and yell “I DID IT!!!!!!” I *so* wish I’d brought a camera with me. 🙂

Meanwhile, I bowled a 156, which amazed me since it’s been 5-10 years since I’ve bowled, and I was never very good to begin with. But in a moment of true “Dad Studness”, as I entered the 10th frame, I went back and whispered in Sean’s ear — “Watch this — three strikes in a row.” And then I went out and did it! Not quite the same as Babe Ruth’s called home run, but as close as I’ll ever get…..

And here we are, 6 hours later, and my right arm is SORE.

    Mommy’s little laundry helper…

    February 10, 2005

T has been trying to help Cari with laundry for some time now, but when you’re 2-3 years old and still knee-high to a grasshopper, there’s not a whole lot you can do.

She was trying to help tonight. Told Cari, “Mommy, let me fold this.” It was one of our bath towels — standard size. In other words, about twice her size. Cari didn’t pay her any attention, nor did Sean or I. Until about 2 minutes later when she returns the towel to Cari … FOLDED PERFECTLY. We asked her to do it again, and she did. Each corner lined up perfectly on top of the other. No loose corners or sides. A thing of beauty.

    We’re still in shock…..

    Christmas 2004

    December 24, 2004

Let it be known and remembered that T, soon to turn 3 years old, is very excited about tonight’s visit from that jolly old man in the red suit. You know who I’m talking about. She calls him:

    Clanta Saw

    It’s crowded in that bed

    October 23, 2004

A psychologist would probably have a good and interesting theory about this, and be able to use this to give us some insight into T’s psyche or personality, or maybe even about the kind of person she’s going to become later in life. But I can’t do any of that. All I can come up with to analyze this is that it’s crowded in that girl’s bed.

Here’s the deal: every night at bedtime we go through this very structured routine where T takes a variety of toys and other things and brings them into bed with her, placing each one individually where she wants it around her pillow. By the time she’s finished, the bed is so crowded that she couldn’t move left or right if she wanted to. We have no need to worry about her falling off the bed.

Here’s what she has in bed with her tonight:

1 – “Baby doll” – her plastic toy baby doll

1 – “White bear” – a stuffed bear, which is actually pink, white, and blue

1 – “Ginger bear” – another stuffed bear, which is more white than White bear

    1 – “Daddle-dale” – a stuffed pterodactyl

    1 – Care-bear – stuffed animal (the pink one)

    1 – stuffed Winnie-the-Pooh

    2 – stuffed puppy dogs

1 – plastic Pillsbury Doughboy toy

1 – “boo” – her thin, white security blanket

1 – Kipper’s Christmas book – the book we read tonight before bed

And of course, her regular pillow and blankets. Like I said, it’s crowded in there. What it means? I have no clue.

    T the Builder

    October 9, 2004

Lately T has been playing with blocks and building things — like most 2 year olds do.

But unlike most 2 year olds, she doesn’t build towers up as high as she can — she builds these little “cities” spread out across the entire floor — 2-3 blocks at a time stacked up like a house or something, and 25 of them laid out in a nice pattern.

It’s incredible to see and I’ve committed to taking a picture next time she does it. Cari thinks she’s gonna be an engineer or architect.
